Local police arrangements were inadequate during Mamata’a Nandigram visit: West Bengal chief secretary | India News – Times of India

Must read

NEW DELHI: The West Bengal chief secretary has, in his report to the Election Commission on injuring of chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Nandigram, stated that while all necessary security protocols commensurate with her ‘Z+’ protection level were followed, the local police arrangements at the spot of the incident were not adequate in view of stature of the protectee.
While chief secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay is said to have insisted that no videography was required to be done as Banerjee’s car travelled through Birulia Bazar crossing at Nandigram, he added that the security directorate did do some videography as part of the usual drill. The footage was shared by him with the poll panel.
The report dated March 13 faulted local police preparedness in Nandigram, saying it was not sufficient for proper crowd control at the spot. Also, there was lack of overall coordination between the directorate of security and the local/district police for the chief minister’s visit in the countryside, a key requirement for any ‘Z+’ protectee. In fact, chief secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay is said to have suggested improved synergy to this effect to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, the district magistrate and district election officer of Purba Medinipur’s report, cited in the chief secretary’s communication to EC, say that while a video surveillance team was deployed at Basanta Kumar Mayer Mandir at Birulia, Nandigram, after the block development officer concerned and assistant returning officer of Nandigram assembly constituency received information that the chief minister might visit the temple, the incident in which she was injured took place at a location about 500 meters away from the temple. Thus, the video surveillance team could not capture the incident.
